Open The Book

“Open The Book” was chosen as St Paul’s contribution to the Bishop’s “Stepping Out” initiative, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Portsmouth Diocese in 2002. It has developed from a project started by “Churches Together in Bedford”, consisting of 30 bible stories for weekly assemblies in schools. Most of the stories are based on the “Storytellers Bible” by Bob Hartman and are told in chronological order. They are imaginatively presented and accompanied by high impact visual aids.
We offered to present “Open the Book” to Sarisbury Junior School during Thursday morning assembly, when Roger (Revd Roger Moseley – incumbent retired March 2003) or Jennie normally lead collective worship. We began the story telling in September 2001. Since that time 50 stories have been told. To enable this to happen, we have 2 core groups of people who are involved weekly in praying for and planning each story.
In addition we are able to call upon people in the church to assist on an occasional basis and to provide materials etc. In May 2002 we held an “Open the Book” taster morning to which the Deanery churches were invited. As a result, St Mary’s, Portchester are now presenting the project in four of their local schools.
